Lauren van Haaften-Schick

The Location of Power

Lauren van Haaften-Schick (b. 1984, U.S.) is a curator and writer from New York. She is currently working on a PhD in the History of Art and Visual Studies at Cornell University, and is the Associate Director of the Art & Law Program in New York. Research interests concern the artistic appropriation of legal theories and tools; artists’ labor, property, and moral rights; art historical issues in law; and critical forms of circulation, with a focus on early conceptual art, institutional critique, and the work of Seth Siegelaub.

She has lectured and presented on her work at Parsons School of Design, the Pratt Institute, Fordham Law School, Artists Space, and the Arts Research Center at UC Berkeley, among others. Recent publications include What Now? The Politics of Listening published by Art in General, NY, Art After Property for C Magazine, and Cariou v. Prince: Toward a Theory of Aesthetic-Judicial Judgments, co-authored with Sergio Muñoz Sarmiento and published in the Texas A&M Law Review. The exhibition and catalog Canceled: Alternative Manifestations & Productive Failures, first exhibited at the Center for Book Arts, NY, in 2012, traveled to Albright College, Reading, PA, Smith College, Northampton, MA, and The Goethe Institut, New York, NY, among other venues. Since 2012 van Haaften-Schick has developed and exhibited Non-Participation, a collection of artists’ letters of protest and refusal, presented at Espacio Trapézio in Madrid, Escalón in Murcia, The Luminary in St. Louis, and the Art League Houston. In 2012 she was a curatorial fellow in the Art & Law Program, and In 2011 she served as a research assistant for the late curator Seth Siegelaub and his work on art law and textile history. Lauren van Haaften-Schick was a founding director of Gallery TK in Northampton, MA from 2004-2006, and AHN|VHS gallery and bookstore in Philadelphia, PA from 2009-2010.
