Susan Schuppli

Infrastructural Violence: The Smooth Spaces of Terror

Susan Schuppli (Canada/Switzerland) is an artist and researcher based in the UK, whose work examines evidence from war and conflict to environmental disasters. Through investigative processes that involve an engagement with scientific and technical modes of inquiry, her work aims to open up new conceptual pathways into the material strata of our world. She is currently Senior Lecturer and Deputy Director of the Centre for Research Architecture at Goldsmiths in London. Schuppli received her PhD from Goldsmiths and participated in the Whitney Independent Study Program after completing her MFA at the University of California San Diego. Recipient of ICP Infinity Award 2016. From 2011-14 she was Senior Research Fellow on the ERC project Forensic Architecture. Previously she was an Associate Professor in media arts in Canada.

Her creative projects have been exhibited throughout Canada, the US, Europe and Asia. Recent commissions include Trace Evidence, a video trilogy produced by Arts Catalyst UK & Bildmuseet, Sweden and Atmospheric Feedback Loops, a Vertical Cinema project for Sonic Acts, Amsterdam. She exhibited at Casino Luxembourg, 2014; Extra City Antwerp, 2014; Stroom Den Haag, 2014; Shanghai Biennale, 2014; Galerie Wedding, 2015; Fundacion Proa, 2015; Witte de With, 2015/16; Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Copenhagen, 2016; Bildmuseet Sweden, 2016 and MACBA, 2017. She has published widely within the context of media and politics and is author of the forthcoming book, Material Witness, MIT Press, 2015, which is also the subject of an experimental documentary.
